Prepare Your Rattan
In Three Easy Steps

Preparing rattan cane webbing is easy. All you need is a bit of water and room to work.

Step One Give It a Soak

Soak the cane for 15–30 minutes in a large tub or bathtub. You can even line its original shipping box with a large plastic bag and soak it right inside.

Step Two Pat Dry

Take the rattan out of the water and lay it flat onto a towel. Pat it dry.

Step Three Cut, Shape & Create

Cut slowly along the weave lines for clean edges and an even pattern.

A Bit of Planning
Makes All the Difference

Before you reach for the scissors, take a moment to check the fit and the direction of the weave. That quick check will make the rest of your project easier.

  1. Measure Before You Order Measure the visible opening and compare it with the roll size. Remember to include the extra rattan needed around the edges for fitting and securing.
  2. Dry Fit Before Cutting Place the rattan over the opening before cutting or securing it. Check the fit and direction of the weave, then make any small adjustments.
  3. Line Up the Weave Pattern Check that the horizontal and vertical lines look straight. Painter’s tape or small clamps can help hold the rattan in place while you adjust it.
  4. Let the Piece Lead the Process Take a close look at your cabinet door, drawer front, or panel. The way it is built will show you how the rattan fits into the opening and where to staple it securely.
  5. Leave Room Around the Edges When cutting, leave at least an extra half inch of rattan on each side. You can trim away any excess once it is firmly attached.
