How to Paint
Rattan Cane Webbing

Paint can give natural rattan a completely different look while allowing the woven texture to remain part of the design. Natural rattan can be painted or spray-painted successfully when the surface is properly prepared and the finish is applied in thin coats.

The Most Important Step

Test Before You Begin

Always test your complete painting process on a cut-away sample whenever possible before applying it to the full project. Let the sample dry completely and make sure you are happy with the color, coverage, and surface feel before continuing.

Your test should include the same products and process you plan to use on the project.

  • Surface cleaning
  • Primer
  • Paint or spray paint
  • Number of coats
  • Drying time
  • Final color and coverage

Start With a Clean Surface

Prepare the Rattan

After the rattan is installed, use a soft, clean brush to gently remove dust or loose debris left from cutting and installation.

If needed, use a damp cloth to clean the surface, then allow the rattan to dry completely before applying primer. The rattan should be completely dry before painting.

Build a Good Foundation

Prime, If Your Test
Shows It Helps

If primer gave you a better result on your sample, apply the same primer to your project and allow it to dry according to the manufacturer's directions.

What We Found

In Hi Key Trading's testing, spray primer produced the best results. Because paints and primers vary, your own sample should guide the final choice for your project.

3

Build Color Gradually

Apply a Thin, Even
Coat of Paint

Paint or spray-paint the rattan using the same method that worked well on your sample. Apply a thin, even coat rather than trying to achieve full coverage with one heavy application.

Keep the Weave Visible

The woven texture is part of what gives rattan its character. Apply paint carefully so it does not build up in the openings or obscure the weave.

Let the Finish Tell You

Let It Dry Completely
Before You Decide

Allow the first coat to dry completely according to the paint manufacturer's directions. Once dry, evaluate the color and coverage before deciding whether another coat is needed.

If you are happy with the result, another coat may not be necessary. If you want additional coverage, apply another thin, even coat and allow it to dry completely before evaluating the finish again.

5

Check the Details

Inspect the Finished Surface

Once the paint is completely dry, look over the rattan from several angles to make sure the finish is even and the woven character remains visible.

  • Check that the color and coverage look even across the surface.
  • Make sure the weave openings remain clear.
  • Look for areas where paint has collected or become too heavy.
  • Check edges and corners for missed areas or uneven coverage.

Work Safely

Follow All Product Directions

Read and follow the complete instructions and safety information for every primer and paint you use. Follow the manufacturer's requirements for ventilation, application method, drying, protective equipment, and cleanup. Use spray products only in a space and manner permitted by the product label.
