Everything you need toย installย rattan cane webbing
From first soak to finished panel โ a complete guide for first-time DIYers and seasoned restorers alike.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN
Tools you'll need
Most of these you already have at home. Gather them before you start to keep the workflow smooth.
๐ชฃLarge basin or bathtub
โ๏ธSharp scissors or utility knife
๐Metal ruler or straight edge
๐ซStaple gun + staples
๐ชSpline & roller (for grooved frames)
๐๏ธWood glue or contact cement
๐งฒClamps or binder clips
๐งฝClean dry towel
๐Tape measure
THE PROCESS
Step-by-step installation
Follow these steps in order. Rushing the soak or skipping the drying phase are the two most common causes of a loose or cracked panel.
-
01
๐ฆ
Unroll & measureUnroll the webbing flat. Measure your opening and add at least 2" on all sides for overlap. Mark your cut lines lightly with a pencil.
-
02
๐ง
Soak in warm water
Submerge the webbing in warm (not hot) water for 15โ30 minutes. This makes the cane pliable and prevents cracking during installation.
-
03
๐งด
Pat dry, lay flat
Remove from water and gently pat with a dry towel. Lay flat on a clean surface. Don't wring โ you want it damp, not dripping.
-
04
โ๏ธ
Cut to size
Use sharp scissors or a utility knife against a metal ruler. Cut slowly along the weave lines for clean, even edges. Dull blades cause fraying.
-
05
๐ง
Stretch & secure
Center the webbing over the opening. Working from the center outward, staple or glue one side, then pull gently to the opposite side before securing. Repeat for the remaining two sides.
-
06
โณ
Allow to dry
Leave undisturbed for 24 hours. As it dries, the cane will naturally tighten and create a taut, even surface. Do not apply heat to speed this up.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently asked questions
Why does my webbing come rolled โ is it damaged?
Not at all. Rolling is the standard way to pack and ship rattan cane webbing without damage. The material naturally flattens once soaked. Simply follow the soaking instructions and it will lie flat.
Is it normal for the cane to feel stiff before soaking?
Yes, completely normal. Raw, unsoaked rattan is quite rigid โ that stiffness is actually a sign of quality. A 15โ30 minute warm water soak transforms it into a flexible, workable material.
I notice color variation in my roll. Is that a defect?
No โ this is a natural characteristic of rattan, not a manufacturing flaw. Like any natural material (wood, leather, linen), rattan varies slightly in color from strand to strand. Most customers find this variation adds to the organic, handcrafted look.
Can I use rattan cane webbing outdoors?
Rattan performs best in covered or semi-covered outdoor spaces โ a screened porch, covered patio, or sunroom. Prolonged direct exposure to rain or harsh UV will shorten its lifespan. A UV-protective sealer can help if outdoor use is planned.
What size spline should I use for a grooved frame?
The most common sizes are 4mm, 5mm, and 6mm. Measure the width of your groove carefully โ the spline should fit snugly but not require force to press in. When in doubt, start with 5mm and test a short section before committing.
How do I cut clean edges without fraying?
Always use a freshly sharp blade and a metal straight edge. Cut on a firm surface. Slightly damp cane (right after soaking) cuts more cleanly than dry cane. A thin bead of wood glue along a cut edge can prevent fraying on exposed sections.
Can I stain or paint the cane webbing?
Yes. Our unbleached natural cane accepts stain, paint, or tinted oil very well. Apply after installation and once the panel is fully dry. Test on a scrap piece first as color absorption varies by strand.
TROUBLESHOOTING
Something look off?
Before reaching for the return label โ most issues with rattan are normal behavior of a natural material, not defects. Here's what to do.
-
"My cane cracked during installation" ๐
โ PREVENTABLE
This almost always means the cane wasn't soaked long enough, or dried out before you finished. Re-soak the panel for another 20 minutes and work more quickly. Keep a damp cloth nearby to re-moisten the edges as you work.
-
"The weave became loose after drying" ใฐ๏ธ
โ OFTEN FIXABLE
This usually means the cane wasn't stretched taut enough before securing. Lightly re-mist the panel with a spray bottle of water, which will cause it to expand slightly, then allow it to dry again under tension โ staples or clips help hold the edges down.
-
"The panel shrank smaller than my opening" ๐
โ NORMAL BEHAVIOR
Rattan shrinks slightly as it dries โ this is why we recommend cutting 2" larger than your opening on all sides. Always measure and cut your overlap first, then soak. The dried panel will be slightly smaller than the wet one.
-
"Edges are fraying" ๐งต
โ EASY FIX
Apply a thin line of PVA wood glue or clear-drying craft glue along the cut edge with your fingertip or a toothpick. Let it dry fully before installation. For exposed edges on finished pieces, a thin strip of trim or molding hides the raw edge elegantly.
-
"There are small bumps/waves in the surface" ๐
โ USUALLY TEMPORARY
Small ripples in a freshly installed panel are normal. As the cane dries and tightens over 24โ48 hours, they almost always flatten out on their own. Do not apply heat or try to flatten them manually while wet.
-
"The color looks uneven" ๐จ
โ Natural character
Rattan is a natural plant material. Color variation between strands โ from pale straw to warm honey โ is expected and desirable. If you want a uniform look, lightly sanding and applying a tinted oil or stain after installation will even the tone beautifully.
